SmartGov project presented at the MajorCities of Europe conference in Leipzig

Close to 200 delegates from 18 countries visited this year´s Major Cities of Europe conference in Leipzig from the 28th of May until the 30th of May.

Danube University Krems presented the SmartGov project in a booth and during the Speed Dating session to the delegates and received very positive feedback for the work done so far.

SmartGov at the Open Day of Danube University 2017

The Danube University Krems opened its doors On 6th October 2017 under the motto «Going beyond the horizon» to all interested parties. Researchers and citizens exchanged their knowledge in diverse participation stations and laboratories.

Malgorzata Zofia Goraczek presented the SmartGov project, its aim and goals. Further citizens were invited to add their feedback about secure pathways into an “opinion map” of Krems. Opinion maps will be used in the SmartGov project and offer the possibility to illustrate and visualise mobility issues in Smart Cities. Thus they promote the discussions between involved stakeholders about secure mobility in their Smart City.

#SmartGov @CeDEM17s Open Space

The CeDEM17 provided an Open Space, where participants can present papers, organise workshops, birds of a feather, events, meetings etc.

Gabriela Viale Pereira and Malgorzata Zofia Goraczek presented the primary results of our SmartGov project, funded by JPI Urban Europe. The project aims to create new governance methods and supporting ICT tools based on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps. Further to simulate the impact of policies for urban planning in Smart Cities with large stakeholder groups.

CeDEM is an international Conference for e-Democracy and Open Government brings together e-democracy, e-participation and open government specialists working in academia, politics, government and business to critically analyse the innovations, issues, ideas and challenges in the networked societies of the digital age.

The Open Space was held on 19 May and was chaired by Malgorzata Goraczek.



#SmartGov at the JPI Urban Europe Conference «Engaging for impact»

Last results of our SmartGov project were presented at the JPI Urban Europe Conference «Engaging for Impact» by Malgorzata Goraczek in Brussels.

The conference debated how to strengthen the European capacities and competencies on urban sustainability and how to create local impact. Urban challenges, as well as the role of research and practive for innovation in Europe were discussed.

Mayors from European cities, as well as funded projects by JPI Urban Europe presented they work in this conference.

Further workshops and seminars brought together participants to influence implementation of the JPI Urban Europe strategic research and innovation agenda.

Break-out sessions offered the exchange in following topics:
• Public sector as a transformation agent
• Cities as urban data laboratories
• Enhancing impact and scaling up solutions
• Social innovation and social entrepreneurship in the circular economy
• Sustainable accessibility

Smart City Governance – Exploitation Workshop by JPI Urban Europe

The SmartGov project was represented by Malgorzata Goraczek, the coordinator of the «SmartGov» project on 2nd March 2017 in Brussels. The Exploitations Workshop with focus on Smart City Governance was organised by the funding agency JPI Urban Europe.

The aim was to develop the aspects of smart city approaches: developing a tool box or a set of instruments of how to support transurban learning and innovation. JPI Urban Europe is exploring challenges and issues to support instruments and approaches shaped to increase integrated urban development in the field of smart and sustainable cities.

Following themes were discussed during the workshop:

«Theme 1: How to handle disruptive innovation and niche markets? Moderated by Amy Olsson – JPI Urban Europe

Which ‘conventional business models’ are supporting urban governance capacities? Do successful new business models counter existing business models’ in having negative externalities?

Theme 2: How to articulate city challenges and needs? Moderated by Ania Rok – ICLEI

The main question was how city related business models will look like: Is there a need for new business models for integrated, multi-sectoral solutions, rather than “simple” ICT applications? Cities and public administrations provide much of the demand. Also cities enable innovation with regulations and procurement.

Theme 3: Who is in and out of the ecosystem? Moderated by Jonas Bylund – JPI Urban Europe

New actors might be needed for new business models: Who are those actors? How to create an ecosystem? Do we need more intermediary kinds of actors? For instance, the changing role of citizens into prosumers challenges traditional, corporate business models. There is also an identified need for intermediaries that share features of both public and private actors.

Theme 4: What are the keys to unlocking the potentials? Moderated by Tomas Soukup – GISAT

A systemic approach for screening/evaluating successful business models in Europe is needed. A lot of knowledge is lost in translation between settings. Is this an opportunity for a brokering-translation kind of business model?»1

SmartGov Consortium Meeting 2017

The SmartGov Consortium Meeting 2017 was held in Vienna, Austria from 16th to 17th February 2017.

All project partners from Danube University Krems, TU Delft, Active Solution AG, Interfusion Services Limited, Kenus Informática, Cyprus University of Technology, City of Limassol and City of Quart de Poblet participated in the meeting to share their knowledge and results gained in the first project year.

The aims of the Consortium Meeting 2017 were:
• Progress status and next steps in the SmartGov project (WP1 – Project Management)
• Status research and next steps (WP2 – Research on Urban Governance and Urban Policy)
• Status first FCM tool & Workshop on a pilot FCM for testing (WP3 – Fuzzy Cognitive Map Modelling)
• Status technical progress and next steps (WP4 – Social Media for Governance)
• Status Use Cases for Pilot Cities and next steps & Workshop on Use Case Quart de Poblet and Workshop on Use Case Limassol (WP5 – Piloting)
• Progress dissemination and next steps (WP6 – Dissemination and Expolitation)

SmartGov insights in the «upgrade» magazine

The «upgrade» magazine wrote an article about the SmartGov project with insights of the goals of the SmartGov project.

The current edition of » upgrade», the magazine of Danube University Krems highlights trends and topics of social and educational policy relevance from different perspectives and creates space for interdisciplinary approaches.

Sonja Tautermann wrote the article «Smarte Daten für Smarte Städte» about the SmartGov project in the newest edition around digitalization and automation.

Workshop on Smart eGovernance The case study of Quart de Poblet Municipality

During this workshop hold on the 28th & 29th June the SmartGov project was presented to involved minicipality experts in Quart de Poblet. The needs of the Municipality of Quart de Poblet were identified in the context of urban mobility and possibilities to integrate citizens through the Social Media strategy.

Workshop target group: Municipal experts, domain experts in the field of eGovernance, urban mobility – (Open) Data – Social Media, project partners and further involved stakeholders.

Outcome of the workshop: Common understanding of the SmartGov project and its goals for Quart de Poblet.


Press conference held in the regional government of València 

During the workshop a press conference was hold, were the consortium was represented by Haris Trikkis, councillor of the Municipality of Limassol and Malgorzata Goraczek, coordinator of the project (Danube University Krems). The Regional Deputy of European projects, Bartolomé Nofuentes, confirmated the support of the Diputación de València to SmartGov project.


Meeting with the President of Diputación de València: Jorge Rodrígez 

The President of Diputación de Valencia – Jorge Rodrígez, responsible for the management of the Province of València received the consortium of the project, to know more about the main aims and the progress, and to support the goals of the SmartGov project, as the European Projects Deputy, Bartolomé Nofuentes, said the day before in the press conference.
